Yes , I already used the same thread to download. It can read and play extensions like flv , mkv , avi and wmv ( also mp4 ).And you can delete videos through VLC app unlike the first iPad one.

sounds like its a good one. just a question tho. arent mp4's smaller in size than an avi or mkv, so wouldnt it be preferable to convert to save on space? I'm still getting the app, I just had that thought.

Converting is a hassle and takes time. Also..I love this app! Down with the stupid apple codec restriction!

Side note: Does anybody know why Apple restricts video formats to mp4? Is that really necessary?

mp3's and mp4's are just more econmical. They use less space.
If you buy your music and videos through itunes then there already in that format.
If your save a cd you purchased then there already in that format.

itunes works fine for me. I have it skinned black.

Little thing to most of you. Containers & Codecs. Those are two different things.

MP4 is a container. MP3 is a codec. You can put an MP3 into an MP4. You can put h264, xvid, divx, and many more things into an MP4. AVI, MKV, WMV, those are also containers. When people say MP4 saves space, they assume that the video inside is encoded with h264. Apple isn't the only one restricting video formats. But they do so because it is easy to support and is fast. The video app on the iDevices may support little formats, but it is hardware accelerated meaning it'll use less battery than VLC, which is all software driven, which takes more power since the CPU is doing all the work and in turn, is working harder. The same applies to: Zune, Android, Palm, PSP, Wii, PS3, Xbox 360, Apple TV, and so on and so forth. It is not in the Apple SDK to allow hardware acceleration in VLC, but that may come in time or someone could possibly do it now.
