This is a discussion thread for the "Visualization: iOS Device Matrix" story posted on the front page.
So according to the iOS device matrix, the 3GS will be supported for iOS 6, but my third gen iPod touch won't be? Doesn't make sense. Also, if you look at the matrix closely, it says that the iPhone 4 does not have retina display. Looks like the creator forgot about the iPhone 4. Edit: The matrix also says that the new iPad [current generation] can be run on iOS 4.3.5, which is incorrect.
I see on the matrix it doesn't and understood that it didn't, but the reason behind supporting the 3rd gen iPhone and not the 3rd gen iPod touch is what was confusing me.
I started making something like this, it was going to show a timeline of all dates and iOS releases and updates and summaries of what they included. I might finish it one day.
I know they do, it's just the processor in the 3GS and the 3rd gen iPod touch are practically the same, so they might as well support both if they will support one.
I see exactly where you are coming from. You are irritated that your iPhone counterpart is still supported and your iPod touch which is pretty much the same hardware wise isn't. It's called marketing. They continue selling old iPhones because a lower price point for people is appealing. But for the iPod touch it doesn't make nearly as much so they drop support and quit making a model after just one year. That's the tough truth my friend.
