Well...... It really depends on the quality of the source (I'm still playing with a bunch of converters for both my iPod Touch & iPhone).. As well - if you are burning a DVD from widescreen format - here is what I'm using:

    H.264 compression - 480x320 - 512kbps (H.264 does a nice job at compression without a noticeable loss of quality)....

If you are converting from a previously ripped file - careful! You can actually degrade quality and make the danged file BIGGER! Try to use about the same settings as the source file - just convert it to MPEG-4 (an MP4 file using the MPEG converter or H.264).

You can decrease file sizes by adjusting the FPS, audio - and of course whether you use H.264 or not...

Yep - I'm figuring all this out, too..

If its a dvd rip source i tend to use the h.264, 768 2-pass option

Gives lovely quality ... files are around 1Gb for a movie though ... 512 is pretty decent though

Hmm.. So it sounds like H.264 2pass Is about the best to use... with 768 kbps..
Even if its a crappy web-avi or a real DVD movie..

No ... the 768 2-pass is really for high quality source .

If you're converting youtube quality vids then u can go much much lower and lower res too

I have not looked at a video side-by-side between h.264 and mpeg4 ... but theoretically the h.264 should yield better results .

    Also... i haven't actually looked at the 1pass 768 h.264
