Video converter for Linux?

    Hi...

    I did a search but it didnt comeup with any possible answer...
    So does anybody know a video converter (.avi, .divx ->> mpeg4) for use with iPod Touch?

    hi
    i am also looking for an Converter von LInux.
    i thought i have read that VLC could do this
    i tried to encode one with H.264 and AAC
    it looks very well and i can import that File in iTunes but i cannot download that to ipod iTunes just dont want to
    here's a Sample:

    when i compared it with a File i converted on Windows with SUPER i cannot find any differecnes
    only META Tags are different.
    Any Solution?
    Vlc would be very sweet.

    Look for ffmpeg or a program based on it -- ffmpeg is the core used by many converters including those on Windows & Mac...

    Handbrake for Linux has to be built from the source which is a pain - there doesn't appear to be a compiled executable available from the Synaptic sources.

    Plus OP was looking to convert AVI, DIVX, etc. -- Handbrake is better for DVD conversions...

    i have ffmpeg, and i think vlc is also based on it,
    but why it isn't ipod compatible???
    could you look the sample pls
    or do you have any profile for ffmpeg or any other programm?

    I use ffmepg.. but for some reason I cant convert AVI.. I can convert DIVX.. tried several things but still it doesnt work.. I dont know if its a problem with Ububtu 7.10 I'm using becasue it seems to be a little buggy... anyway even if I convert in Linux, there is no way I can put it in to my iTouch.. I have to go to Windows and use iTunes.. so might as well convert in Windows... hope gtkpod can have an easier way to import to iTouch....

    thats only MPEG-4, but i want to Use H.264 to use my 8 Gb efficiently
    is there any way?

    avi could also be DivX,dont forget it
    or do you mean .divx?

    I get an error saying Unknown codec 'libfaac' when I try this. How can I fix this?
