You should use iTunes to update for starters. WHat exactly are you trying to do?

You have to use your laptop. You should be able to download 2.2.1 from itunes and not have to bring a browser into the equation. But if you must find a way to use firefox, search for it on google or go here for iphone or here for ipod touch

If you have bought 2.x, iTunes will update you to 2.2.1 for free.

It doesn't matter what you're on at the moment. 2.2 or 2.2.1 are equally jailbreakable. But 2.2.1 fixed some bugs from 2.2, so you might want to upgrade to 2.2.1

Yeah, all the 2.x are equally jailbeakable! Because you are still not jailbroken, you can upgrade to 2.2.1 because some bugs are fixed, and then jailbreak it.
