I was wondering how to use the iPhone without a sim card and be able to call people and text. I saw a video on YouTube where someone was able to do it.

You can hacktivate with PwnageTool or BlackRa1n, but you won't be able to use the main Phone app unless you have a valid sim. When I say valid sim, I mean a sim that's activate with a GSM cell company. If you iPhone is locked and you going to use your iPhone with a company that doesn't sell the iPhone, you may need to unlock. Use BlackSn0w to unlock. You can use Google Voice or Voip, but that requires WiFi, so you better be connected to WiFi or you can call or text. As for texting, there are various apps on the AppStore to let you text free.

What's hacktivate? I heard about jailbreaking. So is there a way to get coverage without a sim card? Like internet everywhere?

"Hacktivating" means activating your phone with a different carrier.
An example would be using the iPhone (USA) with T-Mobile, instead of AT&T.
You cannot do this unless jailbreaking the phone, though.

    And the answer: No.

Without an activated SIM card, you're not going to get service everywhere. Or anywhere.
You can use applications with Wi-Fi (Skype and other messaging apps) to do the things a phone does.
But you still won't have coverage everywhere.

...Unless you built a astronomically large satellite that broadcasts Wi-Fi all over the world.
    Which I doubt will happen.

Wait, I think hacktivation means hacking past the Activate your iPhone in iTunes screen? Yeah, it is. Unlocking is the term used to use your iPhone with another carrier, ex. T-MOBILE.

    Hi,

How would it work if I had a factory unlocked / unlocked iPhone?
Could I use it as an Ipod Touch permanently i.e. using Wi-Fi?

Would I need to first activate it via iTunes using a functioning sim card and could I then remove it and continue using?

    Thanks
