Hello all, Iam new to the IPod world and I need some help.

I have noticed several applications on these forums that I would like to use on my IPod. Now, all I have done so far with my IPod is to upload music and photos via ITunes. This is the only way I know of getting things on to an IPod.

Now, I see mention of folders and and installers but I really have no idea what all this means. The same with SSH, I do not know what this is. I just don't have the knowledge.

Please use layman terms in helping me, I don't mind.

    Thanks very much!

Look for a jailbreak tutorial on YouTube. That should tell you all that you need to know

I have viewed some of the videos but most are for 1.1.1. I looked in my seetings and I have 1.1.4. I also have a 32gb IPod and some videos said that this may not work on them.

I shall view more and hopefully work out a safe way to do this.

Well, first you need to jailbreak your touch. This "frees" your device in order for applications to be added and all this.

    Jailbreak
This can be done by using a program called Ziphone.
All this does is modify files on the iPod and upload Installer.app (this allows the installation of third-party applications)
    More info is here
    .
    Pwnage
This is a bit more advanced and is in beta, so I would recommend the above. It flashes the bootloader of the iPod in order to run unsigned code, so custom firmware. This means that you can restore with iTunes with your custom firmware which includes your custom boot logo as well as applications.

    SSH
SSH allows access to the files of the iPod. This is useful when download apps as you said, applying themes, resolving any issues, etc. In order to install SSH you need to

    1) Go into Installer
    2) Scroll down to System
    3) Install OpenSSH
*There will be no icon, but be assured it is there
    4) Install and application such as Services in order to turn on SSH.

Then for use and more info, look here

This is pretty much it, good luck. If you have any issues then post or feel free to PM me

That was a very helpful post.

BUT, just before I read it something went wrong with my IPod.

I was trying to use ZIPhone and my IPod will no not work.

If I turn it on I get the following:

singleuser boot -- fsck not done
    root deice is mounted read-only

if you want to make modifications to files:

    /sbin/fsck -fy
    /sbin/mount -uw /

if you wish to boot the system:
    exit

may 19 00:08:44 launch[6]: cant exec /bin/sh for single user: no such file or directory

(iam unable to bypass this screen and am unable to connect with my pc or itunes - iam now lost as to how to fix this)

I got past this stage by holding both buttons and then releasing one so it went into restore mode.

    Now, back to work.

ps. Is ITunes 7 OK to use?
