I'm sure this questions has been asked many times before, but I can't find a thread. Can you use the touch as an external hard drive?

Well yes and no. You can't just plug USB to it and use it as a external drive, but you can ssh into it and set up directory / file location. Then transfer files to it as a "storage" device. You can't execute or run the files, but you could feasibly store or move files between 2 computers this way, although a bit slow it can be done.
