I am thinking of buying an iphone in the us but not activating it for at&t instead taking the iphone back to the uk and inserting an o2 sim card and activating it on that network. Would this work? and if not could you please explain why. ps I am not taking about the 3g iphone

    Why?

Why niot buy a iPhone here and not take the contract, just say you will activate it at home.

Why not wait for the 3G as its going to be PAYG in the UK?

The latest deal says it must be activated before you leave the Apple ot ATT store.

If you are talking about the old edge version iPhone yes you can unlock it to any sim using any jailbreak method such as iliberty+ or Ziphine, there are plenty of US versions on ebay for sale from people in the uk, along with plenty of Uk ones as well! I got my 8gb iPhone already unlocked and use it with an o2 simplicity sim only plan for £15 per month for 400 free texts and 200 talk minutes plus an extra £7.50 per month for the unlimited data pack for Edge mobile Internet. Great value and edge isn't that slow a bit quicker then the dial up Internet I had to use a few years ago!
