Now that BlackRa1n is out I was thinking about upgrading to 3.1.2 but I dont want to lose all my jailbroken stuff. What would be the best way to upgrade from 3.0 JB to 3.1.2 JB and still keep as much of my stuff as possible?

Use AptBackup, sync with iTunes. JB and download AtpBackup again and hit restore.

yeah, I tried using AptBackup when I upgraded to 3.0 and it failed miserably. Any tips on how to get it right?

rockapp (cydia impersonator) i have never tried it but it backs your stuff up online so that may work better. personally i have used aptbackup twice and it worked for me both times so maybe just get both.

is there any way I can backup stuff manually by ssh? I might feel a bit safer that way

I think jailbroken apps have several directories, so I think a simple "oh, I'll just go copy XXXX.app to my desktop and put it back in later" is probably out of the question. And the reason why (this is how it was explained to me) AptBackup failed miserably when you upgraded to 3.0 was that it doesn't work properly unless every single app being restored was updated to properly work with 3.0

    NOOOO!

That will (probably wont) work for only an extremely small percentage of apps.
All apps downloaded from Cydia arent just hosted in /Applications

... Theres significant data FOR those apps in other parts of / and its just impossible to back up everything like that.

AptBackup is your best bet, I dont know how you had a problem with it...
... Remember that you need to backup on iTunes AFTER you backup w/ AptBackup.

No way I would buy that since AptBackup works perfectly for me all the time.
