    Hi there,
I have owned a iPhone 4 for over a year and have never had this issue before but this also also my first time updating my phone on a macbook pro. When i plug my iPhone in it asks me to update from 5.01 to 5.1 i click download and update and it gets stuck at "Contacting the iPhone Update Server" and never proceeds past this point, does anyone have a solution?

Have you used TinyUmbrella or a proxy?

No I haven't all i've done with this phone is plug it in and try and download and update it, is it possible my modem is blocking a port that iTunes needs to contact the update server?

It is possible. Usually I have only seen freezes from proxies or iTunes problems. I just uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it on their computer.

mm okay, well i just updated iTunes to see if that would fix the problem but it did nothing i don't really want to have to reinstall it all, would it have any effect? Do you know the ports that need to be open to contact the update server?

To be honest I haven't dealt with many Mac issues in my life. :p (thats not windows hate or fanboyism, just my experience)

You know you can reinstall it without losing any data, right? It is kept in little library files and such.
