So, I have a iPhone 3G and it is running on firmware 2.0 and I want to update the firmware to 2.2 but i do not know how to do it because when i go in iTunes it asks if I want to update to 2.2.1. I need to unlock the phone after i update it.

Just update to 2.2.1 and then you can unlock your phone using quickpwn.

It will update the baseband, but it is unlockable with quickpwn. The jailbreak came out a while ago as well as the unlock: yellowsn0w.

Do not update it to 2.2.1

This is a 3G if you update it to the factory 2.2.1 you will not be able to unlock it (unless it is on 5.08 BB but for now don't worry about that).

You need to create a custom firmware with Pwnage Tool and restore to that if you want it unlockable running 2.2.1 (you will still have to run YellowSn0w but this will load 2.2.1 and maintain the 2.28.00 firmware).

If you are not using a Mac you can update to 2.2 (via itunes) and then run QuickPwn to jailbreak it. From there use YellowSn0w to unlock it.

If this was a 2G it would not matter doing the restore / update to 2.2.1 but with a 3G you will most likely lose the ability to unlock it.

It should work and won't hurt to try. Be careful with advice given here as lots of people give advice they have no clue about. Always do your research!

Just hit shift plus restore and it should not be an issue. If you have problems use DFU. Just do it for goodness sakes!

Like jpga13 mentioned; just do it.

No need to put it into DFU mode unless you want to.
