Is it possible to update ipod 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 to 1.1.3 without paying the 20$ fee?

Yes it is possible. The firmware update itself is free. You are only paying $20 for the iPhone applications - Weather, Maps, Notes, Mail, Stocks. Which will be there for free if you jailbreak your iPod.

Edit: The January Software Update is optional. It wont ask you for $20 when you upgrade.

This worked for about 5 seconds until every 15yr old started posting it on forums.
