An unlocked iphone 4 was $999 when I searched for it online.

Wouldn't it be cheaper if you bought it from ATT, and after 31 days, you cancel your contract?

    $199 iphone +
    $55 1st month +
    $350 termination

That saves you close to $400, then you can unlock it and use it with any GSM carrier.

Would this be a good idea, or are there more consequences for cancelling your contract early?

Or you can buy it as a buyout option from apple for $599 and not sign a contract

You mean buy it straight from apple?

If it's that easy, why are there so many websites selling it for $999?

Because people just got their hands on them and these are the first new phones. Otherwise yes just go in apple and get it this way. I think it was $599 for the 16 gig and $799 for the 32 gig. Someone correct me if Im wrong tho

    Here's my thinking.

    ATT: texting + 450 min + required web (200mb)= $75/mo. TWO YEAR TOTAL: $2000

    unlocked:

    Tmobile: texting + 500 min = $40/mo TWO YEAR TOTAL: $1560

Even if you pay full price for the iphone, you still save $440 after the contract is over.

More people need to consider this option...
