I just received a new iPhone 3G. It has never been activated and does not have a sim card. Is there anyway to turn it into a iPod Touch with Wifi through jailbreaking or anything else? Also is there anyway to tell what firmware it has without activation? Thanks....

Run quickpwn. if you are on 2.2.1, you can not unlock, just jailbreak and it will activate automatically.

That's my problem, I'm not sure what firmware I have because it's not activated. How can I find that out?

You need a sim card for the 3G

Just run quickpwn on it. Should jailbreak and activate it no matter the FW. Then check the FW version in settings. If its 2.2 then you are good and can unlock.

If you just want to use it as an ipod then you can, once its activated.

Ok but when I run quickpwn what FW should I choose in the program if I don't know what firmware my iPhone has?

Trial and error. Quickpwn will tell you what the firmware name should start with during the process of using it. That's how you will know what firmware you're on!
