You just need to click "Restore" when iTunes says that your iPod is in restore mode.

    Oh, just restore.

    No DFU needed.

Easy steps for 100% chance of getting it BACK into life.

    1) Uninstall iTunes and delete all your firmware files.
    2) Reinstall iTunes
    3) Plug in your iPod Touch and put it in DFU mode.
    4) Press restore let iTunes download the firmware (Will get 3.1.1 for you).
    5) Wait and enjoy your back to life iPod touch!
