Hi, as you guys can tell, I'm very new here. I installed UBUNTU 8.04 about 2 months ago. I'm still struggling to get around because I can't sync my IPod. I'm trying to follow the tutorials on several sites and I don't understand what to do after the part where you change the LOCKDOWN file.. Any help is appreciated

I don't know what tutorials you are following, but I have heard Wine can do what you want (instructions). I haven't tried it myself, so I can't say for sure, but supposedly you can install iTunes through Wine.
If that doesn't work, then we might be able to help if you post a link to the tutorial you were following.

I've tried (unsecessfully) installing iTunes under Wine.

Have you tried installing a Windows OS through VMWare and then install iTunes?

I don't know if you can sync with Itunes 8 in wine yet.

Do the above suggestion, but instead of VMware, use Virtualbox. Its fully free and has a smaller footprint and is easier to use.

I wouldn't try messing with installing an entirely different OS just so you can sync... Instead just use rythymbox and install the iPod plugin.

First of all, he's not installing an entirely different OS. He's installing it in a Virtual Machine, which runs inside the host OS. Nothing is touched on your computer.

Second, the iPod plugin only works with the classic iPods. It doesn't work with the iPod Touch.

Apple should get their finger out!

They've ported iTunes to other OS's but not Linux, Why?

@mohaas05: It just clicked for me to use VirtualBox lol. Anyone had any success with it?

Wine doesn't work, I'm sure if I Googled enough I might find a way

Actually there seems to be an issue with the usbfs driver with Vbox on Linux hosts. I haven't found much information on how to fix it. I guess the only alternative now is VMware Server. Of course...I never could get it to work properly.

I read a post by Marcan, a Wii hacker, about getting 2.X firmwares to sync with Amarok etc.
    See if this fixes it.

EDIT; Nevermind I found the file in the Touch. It's been a while since I've been in the filesystem...I should have recognized the path. >_<
