This guide is for people who are jailbroken, BUT...
    - Want to update their device to 4.0.1 because of the cellular algorithm change
    - Want to update their iPad to 3.1.2 due to the various fixes
    - Want to upgrade a device still on 3.x.x firmware to 4.0 so they can jailbreak.

Right now, http://www.jailbreakme.com works only on 4.0 and 4.0.1 firmwares. If you are on a lower firmware and you attempt to upgrade to either of these firmwares manually, you will simply receive an error.

This is an effect of the SHSH checks that are run by Apple's servers. 4.0.2 is the newest firmware, so Apples servers tell iTunes not to let any device restore to any lower firmware. With the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G, this usually wouldn't be an issue. But with 4.0, Apple has figured out a way to virtually add SHSH sig checks into the firmware, so from 4.0 on the devices act just like the devices with new bootroms, such as the iPod Touch 3G, the iPhone 3GS, and the iPhone 4.

This can easily be bypassed, so you can restore to either 4.0 or 4.0.1 firmware and then jailbreak using http://www.jailbreakme.com

Alternatively, if you were on an iPhone 4 jailbroken, and you have accidentally updated to 4.0.2, this guide will help you downgrade to the 4.0.1 firmware.

Here are download links to the "jailbreak"-able firmwares.

    iPhone 3G- Download 4.0.1
    iPhone 3GS- Download 4.0.1
    iPhone 4- Download 4.0.1

    iPad- Download 3.2.1

iPod Touch Second Generation- Download 4.0
iPod Touch (Late 2009)- Download 4.0

The SHSH sig checks will NOT let you restore to 4.0 or 4.0.1, since the newest firmware is 4.0.2. By editing the hosts file on your computer, you bypass that system.

    NOTE:

YOU MUST BE JAILBROKEN BEFOREHAND. If you are on a 3.X.X firmware (Or 3.2 for the iPad), Jailbreak using whatever program is available, this allows the Cydia server to store your SHSH and ECID.

Jailbreak your device according to the following chart:

3.1.2- blackra1n (fixed for the newer iTunes)
    3.1.3 OR 3.2 on the iPad- http://www.spiritjb.com

After you have jailbroken your device, you can open Cydia, then click the button that says "Make my life easier" if you haven't done so already.

    1. Navigate to C:/WINDOWS/system32/drivers/etc/hosts

    If on a mac: C:/private/etc/hosts

    2. add these lines to the file (open it in any text editor)

    Code:
    74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
    3. Save the file and restart iTunes, shift+click (or opt+click on a mac) the restore button and browse for your downloaded 4.0 or 4.0.1 or 3.1.2 firmware.

    4. Navigate to http://www.jailbreakme.com and jailbreak it!

I was really pissed, because I wanted to update my iPad to 3.2.1 but I couldn't because the 3.2.2 firmware was pushed out.

Should I restore to a fresh os first? or just jump in whilst already jailbroken on 3.1.3?

I got a new 3g iPod on 3.1.3 from Apple for my broken iPod and it has been on the "This device has a pending TSS request" message for a couple of days now. It never took that long on my old iPod. Did something go wrong and if not about how long do I have to wait?
