I have a few English-German/German-English dictionaries, as well as other dictionaries, on my iPot that I downloaded from the stardict website. I don’t know how to get them added to Installer so I’ve decided to write a tutorial on how to get them working on your iPod Touch.

    1. Go to the stardict web site and download the ‘tarball’ file of the dictionary that you’d like to have. A good number of language to language dictionaries can be found here:
    http://stardict.sourceforge.net/Dictionaries_misc.php

    2. Use the compression program of your choice to uncompress the file you just downloaded. I use a program called 7-Zip. (After you complete this step, you may delete the file you downloaded from stardict if you’d like because you won’t need it anymore.)

    3. Once again, use the compression program of your choice to uncompress the file that was created as a result of step 2’s uncompression. Now you should have a folder with 3 files in it. (After you complete this step, you may delete the file created by step 2 if you’d like because you won’t need it anymore.)

    4. Open the folder that was created as a result of step3’s uncompression. There should be a file that ends in “.dz”, a file that ends in “.idx”, and a file that ends in “.ifo”. Once again, use the compression program of your choice to uncompress the file that ends in “.dz”. Completion of this step should create a file that ends in “.dict”. (After you complete this step, you may delete the file that ends in “.dz”.)

    5. Install weDict from the Installer app onto your iPod Touch. If you already have weDict installed, skip to step 6.

    6. SSH the files that end in “.dict” and “.idx” onto your iPod Touch in the ‘/private/var/root/Library/weDict’ folder. You may have to create this folder if you don’t already have dictionaries on your Touch. (You do not need the file that ends in ".ifo".)

    7. Open the weDict app, press the “i” icon in the upper right corner of the screen, activate the dictionaries you’ve just installed, and press “Done” in the upper right corner of the screen.

    Voila

There are also dictionaries that can be downloaded from the following web pages:
    http://stardict.sourceforge.net/Dictionaries_dictd-www.dict.org.php
    http://stardict.sourceforge.net/Dictionaries_dictd-www.freedict.de.php
    http://stardict.sourceforge.net/Dictionaries_dictd-www.mova.org.php
    http://stardict.sourceforge.net/Dictionaries_Quick.php

There is also a huge library of language to language dictionaries here:
    http://xdxf.revdanica.com/down/

If anyone has any questions, post them in a reply to this post and I will answer them here because someone else may have the same question.

I cannot extract the files on a Mac because it asks for which character set encoding to use for the filenames. Nothing seems to work. Never had this type of extraction problem before.

Anyone know a source for dict-files that are packaged differently?

Can you boot up in Linux using a Linux LiveCD like Ubuntu? Linux OS can uncompress the files without using 3rd party compression software. Once you get the files uncompressed, then you can put them onto your iPot.

If you PM me with the dictionary you are trying to get and an email address, I'll uncompress it and either upload it somewhere and email you the link or just email it to you (as long as it isn't extremely large).
