So I've seen that many people are asking on how to find out whether their device is a 3rd or 2nd generation. Here's a little guide on how to distinguish that.

    1. If your device is 64GB, then it is a 3rd generation. Just a little hint, to save further trouble.

    2. If it is a 32 or 8GB, do this.
    -Open Settings
    -Scroll to General, Tap it
    -Tap About
    -Scroll down to Model
-If the Model is MC, then it is a 3rd Generation device

If you have an iPhone 3GS, the second method will apply to you.

If the device is MC and running 3.1.3 firmware, It is currently NOT jailbreakable, unless you downgrade to 3.1.2 using Coca Cola's method, you can jailbreak, but it will be tethered.

Note: 3G 8GB MC Model iPods are actually 2G, and have a tethered jailbreak. 8GB iPods MB Model have an untethered jailbreak. Thanks to Ouchy_S and Chamilism for pointing this out.

Download your 3.1.2 jailbreak at blackra1n.com. Underneath the picture, click the icon for your appropriate OS.

Thanks for reading. Screenshots coming soon.

Also, tethered means that if the iPod is powered off completely, a jailbreak tool such as blackra1n is needed to successfully boot the iPod.

DO NOT restore, if the connect to iTunes screen comes up. Just hit 'make it ra1n' in blackra1n!

Make a note, that 3G 8GB iPods, are actually 2G.

Make a note, 2G 8GB iPods MC Model is tethered, while 2G 8GB iPod MB Model is untethered.

    Also you can add.
If the back looks like this:

    (3 Lines)
    Then its a 2nd generation.
    If it's 2 long lines it's a 3G.

I am quite certain you can also look at Model Number to find the correct generation ipod touch. The 3rd Generation should read A1318.

To see if its a 3GS then look on the back and if the apple and the letters are the same "chrome" look. the 3g's just have that grey paint for the letters.

Difference Between 2G and 3G Ipod Touch..
3G Ipod Touch is equipped with Bluetooth, while 2G did't have Bluetooth
