Unlike other apps such as KeepAwake for SBSettings or Insomnia, I am looking for a function similar to the proximity sensor for the iPhone. For example, on a desktop PC, you can turn off the monitor while the computer itself is still running. I don't want something that simply keeps wifi alive, but something that completely allows apps to continue to run- just without the screen turned on. Does anybody know of a solution for this?

    Thanks,
    natejont

ProSwitcher (or just backgrounder) will allow you to run apps in the background... I'm not sure about the wi-fi thing, but its a brilliant idea for a mod xD

    turn off screen

    Fodd1337,
those apps run things in the background. I just want to turn the screen off. it could be running in the foreground with the screen off, and then you press the home button to wake it or something.

It's probably not really what you're thinking of, but you could write a simple app (or ask somebody else to) that would just load a black image and disable the statusbar. If you (or they) really know what you're doing, it could even be mapped to the sleep button, or maybe a double tap of the home button or something.

Sorry about the bump but I found the app you are looking for! It is an SBSettings toggle called KeepAwake

"A New SBSettings Toggle that keeps your WiFi connection awake, even if your iPhone will go in standby."

Insomnia makes an app run while locked.

insomnia doesn't work in this case... specifically, the app called sleep cycle alarm clock
