    Hello all,

My new PC has got an i7 in it and obviously it has turbo mode. In the BIOS there's an option that turns turbo mode on or off. If i turn turbo mode off does it mean the CPU will clock at its maximum speed?

    Leave it on.

Let's say you have a 2.8 GHz i7 with a "Max Turbo Frequency" of 3.6 GHz.

If you turn Turbo Boost off, your processor's highest performance state will be 2.8 GHz on all cores.

If you leave it on, your processor will dynamically adjust core clocks past 2.8 GHz depending on your work load.

If one core has a heavy work load, it may run at 3.6 GHz temporarily. If two cores have a heavy work load, both affected cores may run at 3.4 GHz or a similar speed. If three or four cores are affected, the processor may run all four at 3.1 GHz or a similar value (the actual steps per core vary between i7s).

Basically, leaving it on will allow your processor to choose how much extra juice, if any, to give to certain applications. If you turn it off, no extra juice will be given.

Thanks, my BIOS has no overclocking feature so i thought if i turn this off my cpu will be at maximum speed.

Not trying to hijack anyone's thread, but you're saying I should always have the turbo boost on iPwn?

If you have an Asus motherboard you are actually using an overclocking feature and one of the modes is "Turbo Mode" which will bump up the FSB which is not recommended. If however you got it wrong and it says "Turbo Boost" leave it on

    Enable it
    Download Realtemp
    Run realtemp
Post the results for the multiplier and the FSB

Thanks but i may not try overclocking it, as the only way of cooling the computer is i think heatsink, and the computer is hot enough already

It is not overclocking, it is a feature within the Intel spec, BECAUSE THEY MADE IT AND THE COOLER!
