Thanks to a couple of other threads and some research I have come across a couple of methods that allow you to transfer files to and from your 2G iPod Touch without a Jailbreak.

I don't think it will be a great deal of use as without a Jailbreak you are limited to transferring files only (no apps etc.) but for getting stuff onto your device (ebooks, pdfs, comics for iComic, etc.) this will ease the pain and allow you transfer files in bulk. It also allows you to use your device as a back up drive.

Note I take no responsibility for those who choose to dig around and delete files by mistake, forcing a restore. I'm just showing you the light, how far you walk into it is up to you!

    iFunBox
    Code:

Download the prog and run. Then just connect you iPod Touch up by the USB cable and you are ready to transfer. Don't forget to eject before disconnecting thew cable when you're done!

    DiskAid

I've just started using iFunBox so I can't offer much more than the links at the moment, but I will endeavour to help those who need it. I'm finding it's a great way to transfer comics for reading with iComic for a start!

    Enjoy

No, you can't. As I said in the initial post, for 2G owners it is currently only useful for transferring non-executable data files. You'll need a jailbreak to do more and as we know from the big red flashing letters above.. there isn't one yet.

I use an app called "Files" which lets you set up a network between your computer and your ipod where you can transfer word files etc onto your ipod and view them

Search "Files" in the app store.

I got Air Sharing from the app store while it was free. It's awesome for transferring files. It displays anything Safari can. The last update for it added a local passcode. It is easy to use, and was worth it (when it was free, of course).
