I've found that some of my connections dont work with the media server:

I have 2 connections for my comp, a local one (a 172.16.X.XX ip address) and a static (a 72.XX.X.XX ip address, for connection from whereever with vnc)

the local one works with touchpad but the static one doesnt work with the media server.

A static IP is the IP that you would use if you were not on the same network as the computer you're trying to connect to.
A local IP works within a network. These IP's (from my experience) are typically something like 192.168.1.*, the asterisk being a wildcard.
