Used Touchfree and followed all directions. When asked to reboot the iPod, I couldn't turn it back on. Tried to restore with power and home button, still didn't come back on. Started iTunes and it said my iPod needed to be restored but after the "Preparing the iPod to be restored" window, I get an error that reads: "The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1604)."

Not sure what to do next. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Either go back through the steps to make sure everything was done correctly; or, put your iPod into Recovery Mode, and itunes will take care of making it bright, shiny, and factory fresh for you.

Thanks SkylarEC, I'm a bit worried and I'm looking forward to bright and shiny again. How do I get the iPod in to recovery mode if I can't get it turned back on?

iTunes says that it has dectected the iPod in Recovery Mode and must be restored. After it tries to restore it for awhile, I get the unknown error message.

allrighty, so I dont have this problem, so i'm not able to test it out. but, i read that the iphone was having the same problem when the new firmware cameout. many users were able to fix the problem by trying to restore multiple times(some said four, others said six), until it finally restored.

so here's what else you can try:

-for windows go to, start, control panel, add remove programs
-locate Apple Mobile Device Support, and click change, then repair.
-restart computer, and try to restore ipod.

    or

    -plug in ipod
    -open itunes if not open
    -click restore
-when error message opens, hold both sleep/wake
and home button until the ipod turns off.
-remove usb, turn on ipod, then plug back in.
-itunes should say that ipod was in the middle
of restore, and itunes should auto-continue the
restore, or ask you to continue.

i hope this helps, post back.

Thanks calevans, that worked for me. It took several attempts and a few computer reboots before it finally allowed the iPod to restore. Not sure of the final order of steps to make it work but it finally came through for me. Jailbreak worked fine after.

for you guys who are getting the "The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1604)." error, reboot your computer and try again. i messed up a jailbreak and tried to restore and got this same message, then rebooted and tried again, worked perfectly. so reboot your comp and try again.

just wondering if you got your's to restore Robleton. also wonder what is the week number of you ipod's. just curious to see if it's a week 37 problem.
week number is located in your serial on the back of you ipod:
