Recently my friend's iphone has been malfunctioning. His touch screen has i suppose moved downward below where it is well touchable, for instance if he goes to hit space he hits the letters b or n, and when he goes to click the phone app, he clicks the row of apps above it, restoring it did not help, any ideas?

Well his phone was only jailbroken once before, back in the 1.1.4 firmware era, and has not been hacked since upgrading to 2.0, 2.1, 2.2 and 2.2.1.

What other suggestions could there be?

He restored to original firmware that did nothing.

Maybe have him try DFU restore.

If that doesn't work then hmmmm your left with APPLE

    Is it a 2G or a 3G (I'm assuming 2G but have to ask)?

If the phone is under warranty take it to Apple like NBurnes said multiple times.

If it is not under warranty (2G or 3G) you can still take it to Apple and pay $200 for a refurbished phone. If you don't want to take it to Apple you can replace the entire screen for $125 or so but it takes some work.

The problem is the digitizer and it will not fix itself.

Also, don't try to replace just the digitizer. You need the entire screen; LCD, Glass, and Digitizer.
