I searched and didn't find this. When I searched touch only shows 7G, the search came back with all "touch" and "show" results....WAYYYYYY too many to go through, so on with my question

Why is the touch now showing only 7G of storage rather then the 8 that I paid for? Its JB to 2.0, but even before that it shows 7.?. I know hdd's never are actually what they say they are, but in the case of a non hdd item, it should not be a 1G off.

If there's a thread on this, I apologize, and you can just point me in the right direction, otherwise answer away.

    Thanks!

I'm thinking that the difference is the amount of space that is:

    1) Lost in formatting the drive
    2) Dedicated to the OS / Applications, etc.

It's even worse on a 16GB one. There you have only around 13 GB.

Mate read the back of your box, it says that they consider 1gb to be one billion bytes. In actual fact it is not one billion bytes but 1073741824 bytes. This difference starts to add up. Every drive is like this whether it is a pen flash drive, an ipod or an hdd or ssd for your pc.

The Drive has a total of 8GB. Some Memory is used just so the drive can work. More memory is used for the OS. Others... Its the same for ALL flash memory and hard drives.

i dont understand how it can be the OS because it only takes up 1GB on an 8GB yet it takes up 3GB on a 16GB. The OS is the same right and how the hell can can an OS for an ipod be a whole Gig and if it realy is why cant the Drive be 9GB instead of 8 so i get what i flipping paid for.

Read what Paul already said. The higher the capacity is, the higher the difference will be. But for my 16GB iPod Touch, it says I have 14.6 GB, not 13
