If you send it back, I would restore it first, since jailbreaking voids your warranty.

I do believe, however, that a cracked screen is not covered under the warranty; so I'm not sure what Apple will do.

    yeah you're SOL my friend

a cracked screen means you did something seriously wrong with your ipod
accident or not, it isn't apple's fault and they wont cover it

Apples warranty does not cover user damage.. no point sending it to them they will just send it back to you.

They will not repair it for free but I believe they will repair it. You might want to give them a call to see what it's going to cost to repair. Might not be worth returning, but maybe it won't cost more than $100-150. Cheaper than buying a new one.

So, we all want to know what you did to crack your glass??? And like everyone said, Apple does not cover user repairs and I would also recommend restoring to 1.1.2 prior to sending it in.

Yeah, Apple will only replace iPods damaged through NORMAL use. Cracking a virtually scratchproof screen will never qualify as NORMAL use. How did you crack it anyway???

People, the question is answered right on the Apple website. PLEASE actually look for the answer before guessing...

The screen did not break itself. It was a result of an accident, abuse or misue. The picture tells the story, the screen took an impact in the upper left hand corner. Just as Apple says above, the warranty is now void. So, pay for the repair and understand that Apple has now voided your warranty and you can never return it for any real failure again. Congratulations! You just learned a very expensive lesson, mshearns, and it's about to get a whole lot more expensive getting it fixed.

Again, if anyone had bothered to look for the answer you would have found it at:

    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/faq/

Apple flat-rates their repair pricing. That repair will cost you $199 if it's a 16GB or $149 for an 8GB plus $6.95 for shipping.

    That's a VERY expensive lesson.

By the way, there has been plenty of speculation about what happens if they get a touch or iPhone back that has been jailbroken. That would fall under the "unauthorized modification" portion of the statement above. We have modified the operating system without authorization and that, in itself, voids the warranty. Get it back to an unmodified state before sending it back.

The Apple website says they will return it if it's submitted under warranty and they reserve the right to charge a diagnostic fee for wasting their time.
