I know this is old but I haven't seen anyone ask the question in a couple of years.
My girlfriend has an iTouch 1G. She uses it almost exclusively for music (Spinning). It works great for that. But I have an iTouch 4G and I use Pinger almost daily. It's a great app and when used in combination with a tracfone and bluetooth GPS device, it gives me about 98% of the capability of an iPhone for about $5 in minutes per month (wave of the future imo).
My question is, does anyone know of a dock connector type microphone that will allow the iTouch 1G to be used with any of the "make calls on your iPod" apps? There are a few microphones for use with this connector on Amazon but I can't figure out if anyone is using them for a Touch 1G and/or if they are able to make phone calls with one; with Skype for example.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but many apps (including Skype and Pinger) no longer work on the first gen iPods. (They require iOS 4+)

And Apple's earphones with Remote+Mic aren't compatible with the first gen iPods either.

With it being almost 5 years old, looks like its time to upgrade.

You're right about the upgrade. LOL! But I would spring for the mic if it was readily available and not more than $30 or $40. But it has to be the kind that plugs into the docking port. They are available on Amazon. I just don't see anyone plugging them into old iTouch 1Gs.
As far as software, TEXTFREE W/ VOICE works fine and I can send and receive text messages and receive voice mails. You can call me (but of course I can't answer back). I haven't tried Skype (too bloated imo) but as far as I know it was the last known app to allow using a mic with the 1G.

Well, I looked into it some more...and it seems your right, first gen iPods can't support any kind of mic through the headphone port. There used to be something called iVoice Pro, that worked with the first gens up until iOS 3.1 came out and disabled it.

If you can find one of those, and your on no later than 3.0, then it should work with some apps, but not all. Some won't even install.

Honestly, your probably better off selling it, and put some money toward a 4th gen. You could get a used 4th gen for around 140-150.
