To conserve battery life should I..

    Turn my iPod off completely when not in use?

    Or just put it in sleep mode?

    Sleep mode, and maybe turn off WiFi as well to be safe. That'll keep the iPod from checking in every few hours to see if there's a software update waiting for it in App STore.
