I've been thinking about this for a while, it seems like a fairly decent idea.
Perhaps on starting a new thread, the user could specify a "Thread type"
This is to prevent confusion as to what the OP is talking about.

    Click for High-Res

In this hypothetical situation, Worried User has asked a question. Before doing so, they set the thread type to 'Question'. Helpful User has answered the question, so Worried User follows his instructions, and fixes his iPod. After thanking Helpful User, he goes to thread tools, and marks the thread as resolved. This will notify a moderator, such that they can then close the thread, preventing unnecessary posts.

Edit To clear things up, Thread Resolution would only be available to the OP.

This could aid greatly in the reducution of users bumping months-old threads, stopping the resulting '3 month bump! WTF are you doing?' posts. The other types would more easily categorise threads, giving more info than an icon and a title.

    i really like this idea.
a lot of people like to post even after everythings been said and done.
i once saw like 4 people all in one thread saying restore. restore. restore. restore.
after the first person posts a solution, no reason for the other 3 to repeat.

    good idea.

This was mainly to suggest the 'Mark as Resolved' tool.

i like the idea.. also a good one would be giving the thread starter the ability to close his own thread.. this way the mods dont have more extra jobs to do

EDIT: never mind im sure people would abuse that ability somehow... but i do agree with the original idea lol

bgizzle could do all these things in less than 5 mins. also I don't get why there is no iPod style. that takes 30 seconds to install.
