Hi, my family is on Verizon, but my dad wants a gps, and is really interested in my iPod Touch. I told him the iPhone has a GPS KIND OF built in. So he wants me to ask, do we have to have a sim card or w/e for the gps functionality to work? And what features will and will not work with it?
    Thanks in advance!

nope not for verizon... and the iphone is a pretty bad navigation device as of now, at least untill a decent turn by turn app is made, but no there are no sim cards on verizon

Well my dad has an app all planned out, and no, we don't want to add it to Verizon, we just want it be like an iPod touch, but that it gets signal from the towers to do the whole triangulation gps thing.

There will be decent turn by turn GPS apps once 3.0 comes out

The 3G will kind of do what you want; but it won't pull the signal from the tower's for triangulation. It will use satellites assuming it has a clear view of the satellites (won't work indoors; unless maybe by a window).

I use GPS by Motion X and it works OK as a GPS. I have not done much with it but it will do what you are talking about.

Indeed, and hopefully they won't be as expensive as G-Map is right now.
