This is a discussion thread for the "The Phone That Changed Everything Turns Five" story posted on the front page.
That phone that got me into technology. I remember seeing a news report on it and i just wanted to throw my old nokia out the window. When i finnaly got one, i was pretty pissed it didnt support MMS or copy & paste. But somehow i overlooked that. (Must of been high on the Apple Kool Aid back then) Also remembering jailbreaking it with appsnap. Not a huge fan of Apple like I was before, but I must say this, the original iPhone was revolutionary.
This device was revolutionary; anyone around at the time will know this. It was by far the most exciting tech item to appear in probably a decade. The stars had aligned perfectly on this phone, it was beautiful. People overlooked its flaws because, despite its drawbacks, the iPhone was a fundamental change for the better. In its original unveil at Macworld in January of 2007, Steve Jobs said that it was "five years ahead of the competition." I'd say that he was shortchanging himself by a bit; Android 4.1 caught up yesterday.
I'm just going to go through this article written by Matthew Lynn in 2007. (comments in bold) Anybody else want to critique the rest of the article? I actually laughed while reading it.
That article was based on the original iPhone. It wasn't good, but it was a huge start. The App Store and iPhone 3G with its $200 price point is what made the iPhone launch. I laughed at the BlackBerry and Motorola part. They're nearly bankrupt.
At the time, the original iPhone was ahead of its time and behind in others. It was limited in functionality, but it was revolutionary in design and overall as a smartphone. What I'm saying is that the original iPhone wasn't that popular, instead it was the iPhone 3G that really made the iPhone successful. That and the App Store, of course.
