    hi

    little story:

I was driving with bus through the city. Then I turned on my Ipod and opened Maps. And you know what happened? It has shown me all the time where I am. First I was confused.
    Ipod Touch 1G has GPS???!!!
Now I know the reason. The Ipod detects wlan networks. And because of the wlan networks you can always see your current position.

    - So it's a good tip for people especially in big cities.
    - Even with secured Wlan networks! (That's nice. Idk how this is possible, but it works really.

.. And don't forget to turn on the Wi-fi.

    Edit: requires offline maps !!

lol? no it's not, I swear
you don't have to connect to internet or something, try it, if you don't believe me

btw I guess you need offline maps, because you can't load the map itself only the position

no i believe there is truth to this, i have noticed
i think it can detect the network so it knows where you are
you must first load the map on a network
but then i think it works

and Gorgos is right...if you read the EULA of the firmware on your device (under settings the informations tab) you'll find a place where such a thing ismentioned. it's called wifi based gps...it works better if there are more wifi networks

    Okay listen.

It finds your position using the MAC addresses of the wireless access points.*

There is a database of these addresses and their locations, but you need internet access to retrieve the location of the access point from the database.

If you are around secure networks that you cant connect to properly, you don't have internet access, and therefore you can't find the location.

*I am 99% sure on this

the database is stored inside the firmware and with that it's updated...so if u're using older firmware this might misfunction.

I often used my ipod Touch 1G here in Germany with the offline mapps and the wifi gps thing - it works out - even without internet access!
    and of this I'm 100% sure^^
