I and every iPod Touch owner I meet wonder what the little black oval on the top of the back of the iPod. I used to think it was most likely a light sensor, but recently found out that the light sensor is a little red dot (I have yet to find) above the screen.
My only remaining idea is that it is the WiFi/BlueTooth/FM antenna, but I see no reason this would be showing, especially since covering it up in a case does nothing to hinder the performance of WiFi or Bluetooth.

Any other ideas or anybody who happens to know exactly what that is?

its the wifi antenna. and whoever told you the light sensor is red is misinformed cuz its grey and on a 2g it would be above the screen in the black area, somewhere towards the middly, but slightly to the left. look at it under a bright light and get it so that theres no glare and you should find it in a second.
