It is such a shame. Training for all those years for something as big as the Olympics.

From what I heard, the track is even faster than that. I heard top speeds of 90mph (145kph) were achieved. In my opinion, that is just too dangerous. I'm all for a little thrill, but when we start losing lives for the sake of competition, something needs to change.

This sport has been going on for years. Accidents happen, just like in anything else.

The athletes were questioning the safety of this track leading up to the accident. There were other crashes, too; of course none of them were this catastrophic. Armin Zoeggeler, the favorite to win the gold medal, also crashed in practice. Apparently a Romanian woman had to be airlifted too. http://www.cbc.ca/olympics/luge/story/2010/02/12/spo-zoeggeler-crashes-olympic-track.html
