I bet you could with Safari, just Google free text message sender.

I don't know how you would get a reply

    BTW, I love Canada!

And if you wanna send a TXT to someone with Rogers/Fido, you can do so from their website, by the way.

Most carriers will allow you to send text messages to their subscribers via their website.

heres a simpler way. All you need is an email provider. Lets say you want to text usa tmobile phone with number say....1234567890. Go to a new email and send it to 1234567890@tmomail.net. It will forward the message to that number. To send to phones with other service, check out this list:
    livejournal.com/tools/textmessage.bml?mode=details
    hope that helps!

Ps. Typed that on my iPoT

And if you send it that way, some people will end up being charged to read it as an email, not an SMS message.

its not like that itll come to the guy as a text (SMS) mesaage so there's no worries about that.

    AIM messaging

THE easiest way is to create an aim account (aim.com) or use an existing one. When you go to add a buddy type +12345678901. The "+1" is required before the area code. You can send them text messages and they can easily reply. Also, the number that shows up on their phone is unique to your AIM account. Ask you friend what that number is and you can give it to other people so they can talk to you whenever you are online. This works in iChat and any other AIM client. I believe beejive.com is the best iPhone/iPod touch app to use this method. I hope this helps.
