Tethered = Every time you shut down your idevice you will have to rejailbreak once you turn it on.

Untethered = Jailbroken once and not ever again until needed for new firmware etc etc.

    Actually.
Tethered doesn't mean you need to rejailbreak, it just needs code assistance from USB.

You stay jailbroken, which is why it will go into Recovery Mode, cause there was an error booting it.

No it just needs the USB to trick it into booting, cause without it the checks to make sure nothing is modified get triggered.

So tethered jailbreaks usually need a kernel exploit to become untethered, but besides that nothing is changed. No re-jailbreaks just code insertion and booting.

There won't be an unlock out when greenpois0n is out.
You will need to upgrade while preserving baseband if possible.

MuscleNerd has stated that an unlock won't be out until after 4.2 cause there still is no exploit.

Actually, in a tethered jailbreak, after each reboot you need to exploit iBoot.

The only reason for this is that in a tethered jailbreak, the LLB (Low Level Bootloader) is not patched and therefore will not launched a patched iBoot, so when you reboot, the LLB sees a patched iBoot and refuses to boot and returns to DFU mode. To bypass, you connect your iDevice to your computer and "jailbreak" it again.
