    I have a 1G and a 3G iPod Touch each running 3.1.2.

I downloaded the speedtest.net app on both, and have huge results differences (for the worst).

On my 1G, my download speed reaches almost 6,000 kbps.
On my 3G (32GB so it ha the better proccessor), my download speed just barely reaches 1,000 kbps, and my connection drops frequently.

Is it a defect in my iPod or is the hardware just not as good now?

I've noticed the 3G to hold a much faster connection at better ranges.

Are you running the tests at the same time? Sounds like your connection is only around 6-8 mbps, which is shared across your whole network.

The tests were taken 10-20 seconds apart.

Time may be the difference; try to get everyone off the network, and test at the same time. See what happens.

Of all the small problems I've had with my 3G touch (mostly in the music.app), WiFi strength hasn't been one of them; in fact, I've been impressed by the chip in it, it works great, works on networks with very little signal strength.

Sounds like something else was going on with your network, make sure everything connected to it is off.

the same exact thing happened to me a few months ago, so i restored and everything was fine. on my comcast 802.11g network, the speed test results range from (download/upload) 7000/400 to 13000/1200. never as bad as 1000 though. on my 1g, the tests range from 2200/200 to 8900/800.

Just took the tests at the same time with nothing else connected to my network.

    1G: 139ms ping, 2935kbps download, 1607kbps upload
    3G: 610ms ping, 1869kbps download, 1480kbps upload

With those results, you'd expect downloads on both to take about the same amount of time.

I tried downloading the same movie from the iTunes app yesterday, and my 1G downloaded it within 40 minutes. My 3Gs time kept jumping around between 30 minutes and 3000 minutes (and ultimately I gave up trying).

I'll try restoring it to see if it helps. If I take it in to get it replaced, would they even switch it, since nothing appears wrong with it?
