Well I upgraded to IOS4 from 3.1 on my Iphone 3G last night, and my reception now is terrible.

Before, I used to have full bars almost 95% of the time. I only lost reception in the subway, or in my concrete fortress of a college.

Now on 4.1, I am sitting here on the main floor of my house, having 3 bars. I rarely get full bars, but once I do, it just goes right back down to 3, sometimes reaching 1 bar. 3 Bars seems to be where its hovering at.

Is this a problem, or have I always had the same reception, but the IOS4 is just better at telling how much reception I have.

Your reception is what it has always been.

iOS 4 just shows it more accurately (according to Apple), but signal strength should be the same. No worries!

    Alright, good to know thanks!

And I did realize the reception updates alot faster than on 3.1 (as in the bars change faster)

I'm not sure that's true. The reception on my 3G is definitely worse, calls drop where they didn't before, web browsing falls back to GPRS more regularly (the speed dropping where it didn't before) and overall network performance is now noticeably lower than my Mifi and other handsets that I use.

It is true, apple uses now a more accurate method of signal "detection" the signal bar shows you know your correct reception, before that patch, you had 1-2 more bars than you actually had.

But, iOS 4 is very buggy for iPhone 3G's
If you dont care much for a jailbreak, I would upgrade to 4.1

You can tell by the taller bars.

He can jailbreak 4.1 with redsn0w or if he needs an unlock with a customFW with sn0wbreeze or pwnagetool.
