wait, before one could say "ok, it's proprietary, but atleast there are a lot of devices that use this plug", but now that will change? Why not just go with the standard, mini (or was it micro) USB?

Micro usb is VERY limited for what is being done with iPhone peripherals.

Pinout of iPhone connector - http://pinouts.ru/PortableDevices/ipod_pinout.shtml
    Pinout of microUSB - http://pinoutsguide.com/PortableDevices/micro_usb_pinout.shtml

microUSB is pretty limited to charging and dismounting only

The reason for the tons of peripherals is the biggest reason they have the market... consistency. The connector hasn't changed in years so for developers you know your device is going to be supported on all devices 99% of the time. Now that is is changing there will need to be new peripherals to support it, however I'm sure they will have adapters, like they do for some of the iPhone 4/4S for cars.

The word "confirmed" is completely misused here. I'm sorry TechCrunch, but "confirmed" means that one has established the truth from the real source. No Biggs, you haven't confirmed anything. It's just another report from a source; a confirmation would be directly from Apple. You could even go so far as to say that good ol' TechCrunch is placing their credibility at the same level as the manufacturer, which is misleading.

This is very true. If you haven't noticed, 99% of the phones, excluding the iPhone obviously, have all of the same connectors making it easier for Third Party companies to create a single cord and less of a mess for the consumer.

Now personally I would love the option (and I should patent this idea XD ) to switch between a 30pin and a "new thunderbolt" port just incase your Mac or w/e the case maybe doesn't have the newest port.

I guarantee if they did make a new dock connector there would be a converter for the two dock types so you can still use legacy peripherals.
