Chess has been around for ages; it was even used for strategy and technique in actual battles. However, we don't battle with knights and castles anymore. The world has advanced in technology, including weaponry and tactics. Tactical Soldier aims to recreate what Chess was once used for, except for modern times... At least that's what it feels like. The game offers a strategic gameplay, great graphics, superb audio, little replay value, and a good bang for your buck. GAMEPLAY AND CONTROLS This game is an action adventure, or at least that's what the screen shots would tell you. However, it is only half of that. It is an adventure game, but action really isn't the right word. Could it be action-packed? Yes. Is it? No. The game's story is simple: your base has been infiltrated by zombies from a nasty scientist. Your main objective is to find this crooked scientist who can help you stop the zombies. On the way, you run into friends who help you on your big mission. As you progress through the game, you start to control multiple characters at once. You start the game alone; as you progress, you get to take control of other characters. As you get more characters to use, the game gets more and more interesting as it allows you to plan and do more. As stated before, this game is strategic. The game is basically a battle system that is running at all times. You have an amount of action points, or AP. You can spend these points doing certain actions: shooting at enemies, moving, and taking guard against enemies. Opening up closets to get gear and editing gear between characters also uses AP. Once you are out of AP, your turn ends. Then the enemy gets to go. Each enemy has a different amount of AP. As you defeat enemies, you gain experience points, or EXP. The EXP can be used to upgrade your regiment's stats to make them better. The EXP adds a nice RPG element into the game. One big drawback is that each soldier can only use one weapon at a time, which means there is no secondary weapons slot, just a primary. As you progress through the game, you gain experience points that can be used to upgrade your characters. The controls are actually quite nice when you get used to them. You can pan and zoom using pinch and rotation motions on your iDevice. Then you tap a highlighted area to select, and double tapping the same area allows you to perform the action. By pressing the action buttons, you can interact with different objects, zombies, and people. There are a total of 7 actions: Healing: Healing requires that you have a med-pack. This will refill half of your health points. Grenade: Throw a grenade to attack multiple enemies. Cover and Aim: You take cover and aim at any enemies within range. Doing this will end your turn. After each of your enemies' action phases, you will fire your weapon and try to kill them. Interact: This allows you to open doors, closets, or exchange items between teammates. These items must be one space away from you, and not on a diagonal. End Turn: This ends your turn if you want to end it prematurely. This can also be used to switch between characters. The controls are spaced out and large. The controls in this game are quite simple once you get used to them. It took me about 30 minutes to fully understand them. I spent 20 minutes on the tutorial levels because they don't repeat instructions at all if you miss them. Huge downfall. The gameplay is nice, but can use a little more speed to make it a little more action packed. Overall, the gameplay and controls have lots of room for improvement. Gameplay and Controls: ★★★★ GRAPHICS AND PRESENTATION The graphics in this game are actually pretty well made. They are really nice and clean. Are they special? No. Are they good? Yes. The whole story is told in a comic-book view. We've seen this used before in Samurai and Samurai II. They are really nice and clean, but they scroll by themselves. This can be a real problem for slow readers. I'm an average-speed reader and had trouble keeping up. This can become annoying at times when you are trying to follow the story. The game's story is told in a comic book format, similar to the Samurai game that I reviewed The actual game's graphics are pretty nice and detailed. Up close, you can definitely see that they could be better. However, at a normal zoom you'd use to play the game, they are actually quite great. Transparency effects are added so you can see everything. The game offers crisp graphics, however, they do get bad when zoomed in all the way. The menus and presentation are really well laid out. The menus are clean, buttons are large and really fit the game as a whole. The organization is very simple and you can get running pretty quickly. The only problem is that there is no way to access any menus in game. The menus are clean and fit the theme of the game perfectly. The graphics of this game are really great. However, they have some minor flaws that stop them from being great, and instead make them only good. They aren't Infinity Blade graphics, but that isn't the norm yet for iOS. I was very pleased with the graphics as they were perfectly fine in my eyes. Graphics: ★★★★ AUDIO When starting the game, you are greeted with disturbing music. It definitely gives you an uneasy feeling. It also makes the game seem a little suspenseful and action packed. The action-packed background music, BGM, helps you get into the mood for an action packed game. The abundant BGM in the game is a huge plus. They have normal background music, menu music, and even suspenseful music for fight scenes. It nice sense of excitement to the game. Like the background music, the sound effects are really great too. They thought of everything. Zombie sounds, foot steps, doors, menu sounds. Every gun also makes a different noise. The vast amount of BGM and sound effects really adds a nice suspenseful aspect to the game that makes it much more enjoyable as a whole. This game definitely shines when it comes to audio and is deserving of the full 5 stars. Audio: ★★★★★ REPLAY VALUE The game doesn't have much to offer in terms of replay. The overall campaign has a rated 7 hours from the developer. There are achievements if you are into that sort of stuff. However, that's all you get. The replay value is just bare-bones, you don't get it at all. The developers could have really added something else in. Scrimmage mode, multiplayer modes, online battles, etc. The strategy game can be played in multiplayer modes, each group has their own army and last army standing wins, but none of that is used. I was really disappointed with the replay value that the game offers. Replay value: ★★ VALUE FOR THE MONEY Tactical Soldier offers much for the value, then again, it also shows that there are spots where it won't be of value. If you are looking for a game with a long campaign, look no further. If you like multiplayer mayhem, turn away now. The game has great gameplay and graphics that have their own flaws. The audio is unsurpassed, however, the replay value really doesn't suit the 5 dollar price tag. If you are into strategic, tactical games then this is a must try as it is unique. The game is turn based instead of time based. It gives new flavor to these strategic war games. The lack of replay value really kills this game though, but the long campaign helps this out. Value for the Money: ★★★★ FINAL THOUGHTS Tactical Soldier - Undead Rising is a very nice, unique, and well-rounded game that offers players a turn-based, military-strategy game that will not leave you disappointed. Unless you require replay value. The game itself is long and it's definitely worth a try. However, the 5 dollar price tag seems kind of hefty though.
