Wow this is a shock. I mean yeah they have been jealous but I wouldn't expect them to ever unlock the iPhones to put them on their network.

If people didnt have to buy the phones unlocked, T-Mobile would be at the top of the list of where to go for plans and prices. Either way, I'm sure this will bring more people over to T-Mobile.

I wonder if they can help me with my MMS problems now?

They aren't unlocking them, you have to either buy it unlocked or have the original carrier unlock it.

The real question is how they are getting the displays for their stores? Is apple supplying them with knowledge of where they're going or was apple duped or is their a 3rd party involved?

Ive been on tmobile my whole life. Still no HSPA+ coverage in my area though so I'm still using 2g Edge.
You just need the right settings input. http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-2383

Why not sell unlocked iPhones at the subsidized $200 base price, with a two year T-Mobile contract?

The reason carriers can sell a $850 phone at $200 is because it's locked to their network, guaranteeing that they will recoup the $650 discount over the life of the contract. There's no way anyone not stealing them could sell unlocked iphones for $200. The highest contract cancellation fee I know of is ~$350 so even with that they're short $200, plus most people that would abuse that, never pay the cancellation fee, they just keep committing phone fraud until their credit is shot and then find someone else to sign the contracts. That's why most carriers give you so much crap with warranties/insurance/other stuff.
