I'm a noob here so please be kind.

How do you tell the difference between the 1st gen and the 2nd Gen Ipod Touch?

Also is it worth buying a refurb from apple? I'm considering it, but not sure if they will mail me a 1st Gen or 2nd. I want the 2nd gen.
    Thanks

A first generation does not have speakers or the volume buttons. Second generation does. The first generation can be jailbroken; the second can't.
My iPod is a refurb from Apple (the refurbs are all first generation) and it is flawless.

2nd gen has microphone and volume controls on the side
If you search this forum, there has been a multitude of threads made about the differences

I believe this is a mistake; the second generation does not have a microphone.

    Thank you
Are there any physical difference's? I believe that the 1st gen has a slower processor, or from what I have read here.

The 1G is slower than the 2G.
The 2G has a rounded back and is a bit thinner.

It doesn't have a mic, but it is microphone compatible. Just use any mic that would work on the iphone.
