    Ok...

So after 8 long hours of messing around with this I cracked it.

First of all I connected the iphone to my laptop on Windows Vista and it was doing exactly the same thing so I tried another computer

After installing iTunes 7.7.1 onto the machine it duely informed me that the device i had plugged in wouldn't operate as fast as it should because of the USB 1.1 port I was using.

Itunes then restored the device back to original factory settings (NO 1604 ERROR MESSAGE!)

Excellent I thought, now to sync it back up with my machine, but for some reason iTunes refused to see this factory basic iPhone. So I reinstalled iTunes, still nothing. I then in a moment of pure genius popped in a USB 1.1 hub and plugged my iphone into that... Hey Presto worked straight away.

I'm not sure if this will help anyone out there but after working away at this for such a long time, I thought I'd pass it on so hopefully someone else can have a go. The 1604 error message in my case was caused by the USB somewhere. As soon as the cable was plugged into the 1.1 hub instead of the 2.0 computer everything worked fine with no error message.

So maybe the problem is your USB.

    Error 1604
This error occurs when attempting to restore, upgrade or downgrade an iPhone. To resolve this error from occurring, try placing the iPhone into DFU Mode before attempting to do any of the above. If this error still occurs, uninstall iTunes and Apple Mobile Device Support and reinstall them.
