try rebooting it by holding down sleep and the home button till it shuts off. and then turn it on, and then plug in the cord

plug the ipod into pc/mac and do as above regarding turning the device off, with the device off hold home and sleep buttons for 10, when you get to 10 let go of the sleep button (top button) and keep holding the home button for 10 seconds (I have found with windows it can take upto 20 seconds) and now iTunes will say it's detected an ipod in recovery mode congrats your in dfu mode and shouldn't have any problems restoring.

The ipod screen will stay off the whole time you do the dfu mode
