You won't get it back I am telling you right now, the police report is useless and they will do nothing to get it back. Just being straight up, bin there done that back when I had my 16GB first gen.

Trust me, if the cops are ever going to anything useful it won't be them finding your iPod. If the government didn't have a monopoly on civil protection, you would be in better hands.

Chances are very slim. And if you do get it back there's chances it wouldn't be in the same condition as it was when you had it.

May I ask how it was stolen?

Filing a police report will only do you any good for insurance purposes. It'd be close to impossible for them to recover it.

Insurance doesn't cover most things under a certain amount, and that amount is damn high.

Did you catch a glimpse of the thief or was it in an area covered by CCTV or maybe you remember someone was acting suspicious, any of these will increase the only very small chance you have of getting your iPod back. Don't wait to long to report it, it may have been found or handed in etc. But I can almost guarantee disappointment.

Safeware covers theft. $70 will insure an iPod Touch for 3 years. It covers pretty much anything unintentional.
