I'm sorry but the first thing I checked out when I saw the new iPod was the BACK, they got one thing right, the curved shape, but it's still made out of the same, scratch nightmare, smudging machine metallic back of theirs.

    Why?

so they can give case makers a chance.

    Plastic scratches too ya know.

but if they made a backing like the material used on the new nano it would chip instead.

So you have to choose... chipping or scratching.

i agree this is pretty dumb. apple has not managed to really impress me with any of this. they really go half way. there is still no copy & paste, camera, or plastic back.

Um... try the iPhone back. Vastly superior backing. Scratches and smudges don't light up like New York City on an iPhone. The design really annoys me. It's great to look at for the first, well, few hours, before it's already got smudges and scratches all over it (exaggeration). I guess it's designed so that you have to get a case to keep it in half-decent condition.

good point tes they would pay more on a material than the money gained from sales but they can always use titanium and advertise their bulletproof iPod that's saved more than people than the amount of people that bought it
