What if someone steals your ipod? Some needs to make a app that can trace down your ipod if someone is in a wireless network.

But what if they do a restore? This would be a really cool thing though

If someone is going to mug you ... they are probably not clever enough to do a restore...

this sort of app sounds like a battery drainer

I'm sure there would be a way to make it run only when it's needed/lost. Maybe if it only reported where it was when it's on charge. I think there would be an even better method though. But I'm not sure if the effort somebody puts into this would be worth the end result, maybe if the people who have nothing better to do than hack online multilayer games should do this.

This is how i think it could work if some steals it, there could be a app on your computer to check to see if it is connect to a wifi and trace it down.

This SHOULD have been an option LONG ago. EVERY IPOD (including nanos, minis, etc) has a Model # and Apple should be able to find out (if you were to report to them if stolen) where (maybe by ip address) the ipod is..

    Does that make sense?

it shouldn't be too difficult to port inadyn or something similar. I run an ftp site from my home so I use Dyndns.com to keep my domain pointed at my variable IP. Currently I have my router doing this, steadily informing dyndns of my current IP, but previously I was using inadyn running as a background shell process on my linux box.

if kept a program like this running (there are versions for all types of *nix written in various languages) then you would be able to get the most recent IP of the ipod fairly easily by checking your account at dyndns.

just a thought. still, doing a whois etc might still not get you anywhere even if you have the IP. Hack their sh*t as revenge and maybe you could get personal details enough to get it back or sick the popo on them.
