Maybe I am misunderstanding something here, but I wanted to see what's up.

I have noticed that when I do a speed test on my DSL that the results are much lower on the iPod than on my laptop. For example, if on the laptop, the speed test says 1.68Mbps. But the iPod will show like 748Kbps. In general it's 2x or more slower. I have tried both DSLReports.com app and the speedtest.net app. In both cases i have used the same servers when testing iPod vs. laptop.

I thought these test were testing my broadband connection. If so, why such a huge and consistent difference?

iPod touches only have WiFi 802.11 b/g but most modern laptops have wireless n which is faster, and better range/strength.

hm, I'm not sure, then, are you quite far from the router?

Same distance. Shouldn't matter tho as I am testing my actual connection to the Internet and not my wifi signal. I could see distance have a little effect but not like I am seeing.

The iPod does not have as good a connection, ever, I'm not sure why, it just doesn't.

From my experience my ipod has a faster download speed than my laptop does. This might be because of the faster servers that apple has set up

Not saying the ipod isn't going to be generally slower than a laptop, but it's nothing to do with the transfer protocol. It could be chalked up to about 50 different reasons.

At 54 megabits/sec, 802.11 G is WAY faster than any incoming bandwidth from an ISP that we have available. Using a router/network card with the "N" designation would benefit only in home network activities such as streaming media.
